It’s 1976, and naive, doormattish narrator Jean Warner has uneasily settled for careerless married life in small-town New Hampshire in My Life, Starring Dara Falcon. So when foxy, flamboyant, manipulative actress Dara Falcon breezes onto the scene and lures Jean into devoted friendship like prey to a spider (one of Ann Beattie’s many cliched images), the plot shifts from the endless cataloging of Jean’s dull doings to her mimicry of Dara’s narcissism — and, with it, lots of sudsy, man-stealing melodrama. Unfortunately, Beattie colors the women’s rivalrous relationship with all the subtlety of a Betty and Veronica comic book. C+
