Whoopi Goldberg and Christopher Reeve are some of the stars giving advice to graduates this year

It’s that time of year when scores of celebs can be found podium-side, offering life-affirming commencement thoughts to graduates. A few choice words:

Star: Whoopi Goldberg School: Brandeis Words of wisdom: ”If you give respect, you can demand it back. Learn to be unpopular against popular people. It’s fun. I know.”

Star: Bob Newhart School: Catholic University Words of wisdom: ”Laughter gives us distance. It allows us to step back from an event over which we have no control and deal with it….It helps distinguish us from animals. No matter what hyenas sound like, they are not actually laughing.”

Star: Christopher Reeve School: Juilliard Words of wisdom: ”I have such warm memories of being here. Although I also remember that at any moment you could be invited upstairs for a little chat and be told that perhaps you might go into computer programming instead. And people disappeared.”

Star: Bill Cosby School: George Washington University Words of wisdom: ”No matter where you work, seek out the janitor…. They know everything and they know everybody. Don’t ever think that you know more than someone who is mopping a floor.”

Star: Kathy Kinney School: Stevens Point (Wis.) Area Senior High Words of wisdom: ”Everyone had a suggestion on what I should tell you. Everybody’s life is different, so it doesn’t work to compare. And everyone agreed the most important thing you should know is you will never, ever, ever, ever use any of that algebra.”
