Quoted on the book jacket, Oprah calls Sinbad ”the funniest man on the planet,” but I’ll bet she was referring to his stand-up talents. His amiable, low-key literary effort with David Ritz, Sinbad’s Guide to Life: Because I Know Everything, cutely spoofs relationship self-help books (”We men are not from Mars. We are from here in the neighborhood, just down the street”) and details some of Sinbad’s humiliating moments as the gawky son of a Michigan preacher, a happy but befuddled dad, and a bitter divorced guy. But his onstage quips translate into choppy prose, deflating one guffaw after another. B-
