Though the small-town-boy-meets-big-city conceit has been overworked, Ed’s Next Move manages to freshen it. The initial move that Ed (Matt Ross) makes is from a Wisconsin farm to New York City, where his lack of cynicism stuns the natives. His next one, though, is tougher: striking up a romance with the beautiful, aloof woman (Callie Thorne) who catches his eye. Keeping Ed’s Manhattan assimilation nicely understated, Ross makes his character’s naivete charming rather than rubelike — and Ed’s embarrassment at the Midwest’s signature symbols (like cows and cheese) rings true. A theatrical flyover, this indie film has a pleasing light touch. B
