If Moreau’s freewheeling character from Jules and Jim had survived, she might have become the glam grande dame author she plays in this Merchant Ivory concoction. Elegantly coiffed and costumed, the French legend drifts through rooms in spacious Manhattan and Paris apartments while trying to piece together a mystery from her youth. Unfortunately, the interesting, diverse cast — including Carter (as Moreau’s adoring maid), Josh Hamilton, Sean Young, Sam Waterston, and Jean-Pierre Aumont, in a rare appearance — can’t overcome lackluster direction and an unengaging script. It’s the kind of movie in which a gorgeous black Citroën makes a stronger impression than the actors riding in it. D
