Book Review: 'Stanley Kubrick: A Biography'
As the director of 2001: A Space Odyssey, Dr. Strangelove, and The Shining, Stanley Kubrick should be a fascinating subject for a bio. But the Kubrick here is boring. The product of copious research and interviews (though not one with the reclusive director himself), the book traces Kubrick’s life from its beginnings in the Bronx, through his stint as a Look magazine photographer, and on to his emergence on the feature-film map with 1953’s Fear and Desire. Perhaps LoBrutto was overwhelmed by all the material: The result is less a portrait of a life than an encyclopedia of one. C
