The wittier pedal stompers from piano man Ben Folds’ power trio pack a definite Ferrante-&-Teicher-go-moshing punch. But his real alt-pop genius emerges in pretty, apathy-defying anthems for the lovelorn like ”Battle of Who Could Care Less” and ”Selfless, Cold and Composed.” Guitarless, cool, and compositionally overqualified, Whatever and Ever Amen has everything you’d want out of a rock album right now except a wah-wah pedal.
