A quirky-sweet footnote of a band, James return with Whiplash, their juicy follow-up to 1993’s popular Laid. As before, producer Brian Eno lends a hand, and the result veers from catchy delights (”She’s a Star”) to experimental detours (”Greenpeace”), before signing off with a dreamworldly lullaby (”Blue Pastures”). Whiplash is alterna-pop at its finest.
