It seemed like a good idea: Get the kings of ’70s arena pop to record a single with ’90s alt-rock knob twiddler Steve Albini (Nirvana, Bush). Sadly, it doesn’t work. Albini’s post-punk aesthetics clash with Cheap Trick’s melodic leanings, leaving the band in a sea of sonic sludge. Still, on Baby Talk, Trick’s game performance — and Albini’s obvious respect — proves infectious, even if it’s no ”Surrender.”
