The calendar may read 1997, but Depeche Mode’s moping like it’s 1984. On “Barrel of a Gun,” they’ve unearthed the moaning synths, squawking guitars, and clanking percussion of their youth, but for all the lite industrial pomp, forgot to write a song to go with it. After intoning lyrics about torture, singer David Gahan asks, ”What do you expect of me?” A hook, maybe?
