Can the pairing of a New Age pianist and a country singer really work? Yes, if the former has a firm grasp of melody and the latter sings like a pop chanteuse. One problem: Not even Martina McBride’s earnest rendering of “Valentine” can make Jim Brickman’s pretty but airless ballad soar.
