HELLO, DOLLY! Barbra Streisand, Walter Matthau (1969, FoxVideo, G, $44.98) They don’t make ’em like Hello, Dolly! anymore, but the truth is, in 1969 they didn’t either. Which is to say that this humongous version of writer-composer Jerry Herman’s deliberately old-fashioned Broadway musical was anachronistic on arrival, a lumbering dinosaur of a movie that got by mostly on the sheer force of the young Streisand’s will. This new laserdisc version, however, is as high-tech as anyone could ever want, boasting a stunning wide-screen transfer and a remixed Dolby Digital soundtrack that lends the big production numbers an aural oomph more often associated with heavy-metal concerts. Whether that’s what director Gene Kelly intended remains an open question. B
