In a perfect world, the soundtrack to a modern-day Romeo & Juliet would include hip-hop sonnets and Green Day doing ”Greensleeves.” No such luck. With a monotonous half-song from Garbage and the Butthole Surfers’ aptly titled ”Whatever,” bland alterna-rock dominates the soundtrack to William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet, making the few good songs — Des’ree’s perfectly sappy ”Kissing You,” the Cardigans’ bouncy ”Lovefool,” Everclear’s ”Local God” — sound all the more out of place. A star-cross’d compilation indeed. C+
