One of the more damning talents of the straight-to-tape knockoff is its ability to reduce all screen trends to two or three archetypal story lines. Virus is an unabashed cheapie that cops the trappings of the recent rash of ”outbreak” films — the deadly virus unleashed, the melting flesh, the tinfoil space suits. All of which merely dresses up a standard fugitive movie, as the lone hero (former pro linebacker Brian Bosworth) outwits the forces of evil (the U.S. government) in a woodsy setting. The result poses a fatal contradiction: Viruses like Ebola enthrall us because they’re novel and unpredictable; the same cannot be said for Virus. D
