As the din surrounding the Academy Award-winning Schindler’s List faded, a smaller voice emerged, echoing the Holocaust atrocities endured by one of the world’s most famous diarists in a film that claimed the 1995 Oscar for Best Documentary. Using interviews and family photographs, writer-producer-director Jon Blair vividly brings to life this introspective teenager through the memories of her friends, her father, and the woman who hid her family, profiling a precocious, sharp-minded young woman whom one friend describes as ”spicy.” Such poignant impressions do much to offset Anne Frank Remembered‘s only flaws: its slow pace (magnified by the small screen) and Glenn Close’s matronly, WASPy reading of a German Jewish girl’s journal. B+
