The original The Fly scared baby boomers something fierce in its day, but time hasn’t been kind to it; in fact, its big scare moments seem almost ludicrously chaste. But as talky, stilted, and often just plain silly as it is, this new letterboxed version makes the best case for the film; the print looks gorgeous, the screams sound great in the Dolby Digital surround remix, and the wide-screen compositions are (at last) faithfully rendered — thus putting to rest the old canard that in the famous ”Help meee!” scene director Kurt Neumann shot Price (the Fly’s brother) and Marshall (the dogged cop) separately, since when they looked at each other they cracked up.
