Sunset Park

In Sunset Park‘s urban jungle, life is surprisingly easy. Respect is won with a few trite words; potentially fatal contretemps are settled with a single direct look. Somehow, a petite but tough white woman who knows nothing about basketball (Perlman) can find herself coaching an all-black male high school team and raising their consciousness in the space of one season. Every game has a cliff-hanger tie, and it’s always make or break for the troubled kid with promise (appealing newcomer Starr). And where might this urban jungle be? The movie says Brooklyn, but it’s strictly fairyland. Aiming for Hoop Dreams, this one has nothing similar to recommend it except a great hip-hop soundtrack. Go for it, not the flick. C-
