An angst-ridden punk guru turned sweet-natured cult figure, Jonathon Richman returns to the big leagues (via Neil Young’s new label) with this typically friendly collection. Surrender to Jonathan offers a decent representation of Richman’s considerable charms but largely lacks the effervescence of his best work. Still, such tender ballads as ”Surrender” and ”Floatin”’ ably reconcile Richman’s liberated-manchild persona with more adult concerns. B
