A warning to action junkies who rent this Jean-Claude Van Damme vehicle expecting the usual lean, mean martial artistry. In The Quest, his directing debut, the Muscles From Brussels jumps in over his head, flailing around in a period adventure that’s just as clunky as it is convoluted. Starting out on the streets of ’20s New York, our hero gets shanghaied by gunrunners, then rescued by a gentleman pirate (Roger Moore), then sold into slavery in the South Seas. Several plot spasms later, he’s in the Tibetan ”Lost City,” competing in a forerunner of the Ultimate Fighting Championship. Van Damme loyalists are advised to fast-forward to this main event. Sitting through the preliminaries could leave you feeling prematurely punch-drunk. C-
