Like its protagonists, this morose Gen-X feature (which had a tiny theatrical release) is an exasperating underachiever, too content in its sulking frustration to get anywhere. Leading a strong cast through an anorexic script about white-collar underemployment, Dazed and Confused‘s Rory Cochrane plays John Martin, a would-be writer stuck doing menial temp work in Los Angeles. Although his inertia is sorely tested by a needy nerd roommate (Sean Astin) and a manic-depressive flirt (Kyra Sedgwick), John — and The Low Life — slouches along, caring little and saying even less. Ennui in a box. C+
