Room of One's Own

Rachel Z has achieved that rarity in jazz or any genre: a successful concept album. Spinning off the title’s nod to Virginia Woolf, Z pays homage to women of artistic and/or historical significance, and features such notable female musicians as orchestrator-conductor Maria Schneider. Z’s harmonic language and sense of structure on Room of One’s Own reveal the influence of Wayne Shorter, but she’s clearly honing a voice of her own. A-
