Judging from their rustic, acoustic style and ragged, heartfelt vocals that recall American Beauty-era Grateful Dead, you’d never guess that this quartet is led by longtime Elton John lyricist Bernie Taupin and veterans of Rod Stewart’s band. With a tribute to Dennis Hopper and Harry Dean Stanton and admirable sentiments like ”I don’t want to be beautiful,” Last Stand in Open Country is a lovable mutt of an album, fleas and all. B-
