Beyond 1969’s ”Streets of London,” Yanks know little of U.K. singer-songwriter McTell. But this 25-year anthology shows us what we’ve missed. From ”Summer Girls” (inspired by Dylan Thomas’ life) to ”Michael in the Garden” (about an autistic boy), McTell’s songs are substantial and literary without ever getting pretentious. From Clare to Here: The Songs of Ralph McTell should be required listening for every aspiring folkie. B+
