The debut CD by the 17-piece jazz ensemble, led by trumpeter Jon Faddis in association with New York’s renowned concert hall, was recorded in unedited takes with two microphones. It sounds ”live” — and alive, which is what makes the Carnegie Hall Jazz Band unique among repertory jazz groups. Rather than simply re-create recorded works, Faddis commissioned new arrangements of old pieces such as ”Sing, Sing, Sing.” This nearly makes institutionalized jazz seem like a good idea. B+
