In the made-for-cable Detonator, Brosnan comes over to our side. Although his hero is more overtly military than Bond, he shares certain affinities with that character; among other things, he condescends to a female colleague (Baywatch‘s Alexandra Paul), who later proves to be his equal. Detonator plays its post-Cold War cards the only way it can: It makes its villain a renegade Russian general (Christopher Lee), who — what do you know? — plants a nuclear bomb on a train in an effort to bring back the bad old days. While mostly routine, Detonator sports an enjoyable cast (including Patrick Stewart and The Silence of the Lambs‘ Ted Levine) and a mildly amusing payoff that delivers a whimper instead of a bang. C
