A trek through the information-dense site Discovery Channel Online — animated by snakes, birds, wombats — reveals a massif of often longish articles accompanied by vivid photos, covering a wide range of subjects, from science to history. Highlights include a folksy piece on beavers and an intriguing, heavily hyperlinked feature on artificial life, computer programs that can create novel organisms that grow, fight, and reproduce. Here, I learned about ”Boids,” a simulation of flocking birds; the software was the basis for the wildebeest stampede in The Lion King. Still, it was all a bit much. I felt like a lion gorged on its kill — stuffed, but pleasantly so. B
