Vocalist Jeanne Lee and pianist Mel Waldron’s duet recording on After Hours is intimate to the point of confidentiality, as if they were whispering into each other’s ear. With her wisp of a voice, Lee exploits the power of inference, while Waldron, once an accompanist for Billie Holiday, knows how to frame a phrase with perfect, minimal touches. Standards have rarely been executed with such gossamer care and finesse. A-
