Canadian expatriate Renee Rosnes is one of the smartest and most able young pianists to emerge in a decade that has witnessed an avalanche of new, capable jazz keyboardists. A fluent soloist who never lets her considerable technique outrun her taste, Rosnes also shines as a composer (all eight tunes on Ancestors are hers) and as a discriminating leader who knows how to share the spotlight with her sidemen. If Ancestors isn’t quite Rosnes’ breakthrough recording, it’s ballpark close.
