Having in recent years forsaken Tex-Mex nostalgia for artier hippie-boogie nostalgia, Los Lobos get into a jazzy conga-guitar-sax groove on Colossal Head. But only in the soulful ”Little Japan” and salsa- refried ”Maricela” does their singing glide as loosely as their rhythms. They waste too much time groaning leaden beat-generation platitudes.
