Girl meets boy, girl falls in love, boy gets mauled by grizzly bear. Going to the Sun is not exactly your basic happily-ever-after fairy tale — and that’s just in the first 30 pages. Seven years later, Penny Culligan, juvenile diabetic and emotional ghost, mounts her bicycle for a solo trip from Chicago to Alaska. There’s a lot of on-the-road musing going on in Penny’s head, but happily it all gets real when she meets Ndele Rimes. This guy, with a speedy roadster and plenty of sexual energy, may not be quite what he seems, but his story gives Penny something in the present to wonder about. James McManus has crafted a story that’s both a rugged adventure and a mesmerizing inner monologue, a tale that finally becomes a love story, minus the mush. B
