Hipster violence ran out of luck when director Robert Rodriguez got Hollywood’s okay to make a sequel to his breakout indie El Mariachi, thereby turning a great tale of ordinary-guy revenge into yet another overblown action movie. In Desperado, Banderas performs all kinds of impossible stunts as a wandering guitarist seeking to avenge his girlfriend’s murder. On video, Desperado‘s repetitive gunplay has been made forgivable by Quentin Tarantino’s goofy presence and Steve Buscemi’s dead-on performance as the voice of reason. But when the movie finally turns into a full-blown comic book, you’ll be counting the bullet-riddled minutes until you can return to the video store and rent the original.
