Candlebox Director Gus Van Sant (To Die For) meanders as usual, editing Candlebox’s Understanding with an artist’s sensibility for color rather than narrative, arbitrarily cutting from fishing boats to the band in waist-deep water. It’s pretty random until Kevin Martin sings underwater for 56 unbroken seconds — a heart-stopping stunt that crystallizes the song’s energy. From there, Van Sant builds with uncharacteristic crispness. B*
