Back from the good as dead, Ricky Skaggs starts Solid Ground like a house afire, using Vince Gill and Alison Krauss on backup for a lively set that updates his bluegrassy sound with sitar and power guitar. Then he ruins it with sentimental moralizers: ”Cat’s in the Cradle” by Harry Chapin, and ”Can’t Control the Wind,” in which a dad teaches his son life’s important lessons. Except, maybe, to quit while he’s ahead.
