John Carpenter’s remake of the 1960 classic immediately benefits from its video release, since the small screen befits Village of the Damned‘s made-for-cable feel. Carpenter has wisely left the original plot, with the residents of a small town going through a mass pregnancy that births an evil brood of clearly alien kids. The only problem is in comparing this version with the first: Reeve’s hero lacks the fly-in-the-ointment flair of George Sanders in the original. At least Alley scores with her government agent Woman in Black, icily monitoring and planning the demise of the murderous towheads. Meanwhile, veteran video star Michael Para provides the film’s most compelling air of mystery, since he gets fourth billing as a character who dies in the first 15 minutes. B-
