Remember The Night

In Remember the Night, one of Hollywood’s forgotten treasures, a district attorney (MacMurray) takes pity on a shop lifter he’s prosecuting (Stanwyck) and brings her home to Indiana for Christmas. There she’s welcomed by his kindly mom (Beulah Bondi) and aunt (Elizabeth Patterson). Of course, love prevails, but not without a little pain and moral consideration. The crackerjack script by Preston Sturges (Sullivan’s Travels) is ambiguously romantic; amid all the corn and apple pie, it’s riddled with dark nug gets of emotion, such as Stanwyck’s visit with her icy mother and the movie’s disarmingly honest ending.
