On its own, this chunky, blue-eyed soul song — in Collins’ choked, Bowieish croon — is pleasant, but unspectacular. What sets ”A Girl” apart is the arrangement: Over Paul Cook’s massive drums are cool, jaunty vibes, wheezing synthesizers, and a taut guitar, which turn ”Girl” into a witty, memorable single. B+
