Disproving the conventional wisdom that dramas don’t repeat well, NBC’s ER placed 3rd for the summer, topped only by its Thursday-night companions Friends and Seinfeld (regular prime-time ratings were unavailable at press time due to the Labor Day holiday). In a season dominated by reruns, fresh episodes of newsmagazines also scored big, with ABC’s PrimeTime Live (5th) and 20/20 (7th) leading the list. Only 10 programs drew more than 15 million viewers per week, and only one of those was on CBS-60 Minutes (10th). Fox’s highest-rated series were the long-running comedies The Simpsons and Married … With Children, which tied for 51st. And proving the conventional wisdom that soap operas repeat poorly, Fox’s Beverly Hills, 90210 and Melrose Place brought up the rear in 106th and 107th, respectively.
