Well, silly as it sounds, I just finished War and Peace. I’m trying to read everything that I should have read in college. I’m reading a lot of junk — not including Tolstoy, obviously. It’s very hard to read anything contemporary and of a strong literary style when I’m writing. It’s like trying to compose music with other music in the background. I’m reading cop thrillers. One that stands out is Try, by Dennis Cooper. It’s about chickenhawks, adults who prey on young boys. He took a horrific subject and rendered it in this compelling way.

Richard Price is the author of The Wanderers and, most recently, Clockers, which Spike Lee has adapted for the screen. The movie will open Sept. 13.
