Wyatt Earp

Writer-director Lawrence Kasdan’s seemingly endless take on the Old West’s most celebrated lawman bombed in theaters, partly because the entertaining but trashy Tombstone had already revived the same overfamiliar material, and partly because star Kevin Costner looked as if he’d rather be somewhere else (filming Waterworld, perhaps). Undeterred, Kasdan has unleashed this deluxe wide-screen laserdisc version of Wyatt Earp, with an additional 20 minutes of footage (including a teasing scene of Earp courting his girlfriend) and the original shooting script. He needn’t have bothered; apart from Dennis Quaid’s nicely underplayed Doc Holliday, this Earp saga still pales before any of the previous versions. Five words, Larry: John Ford’s My Darling Clementine. C+
