On his 1993 debut album, Texan Tracy Byrd comes across as little more than another George Strait clone, a tag he worked hard to dispel on his second album and completely does away with on Love Lessons, his third. But while Byrd possesses a fine mahogany baritone (perfectly suited to the Haggardesque ”Heaven in My Woman’s Eyes”), he chooses to waste most of his energy on mindless dance tunes and hokey lyrics. A real shame. B-
