The Bridges of Madison County notwithstanding, director David Lean’s magnificent rendering of the short, passionate, and unconsummated affair between two middle-class, middle-aged Brits remains the most memorable treatment of extramarital romance in movie history. The laserdisc version of Brief Encounter is struck from a pristine print, the better to savor Robert Krasker’s noir-ish cinematography, but beware the bonus audio track, a fact-filled yet numbingly dull commentary in which film historian Bruce Eder mostly describes what’s right in front of you.
