In this lush film, the fourth remake of the March sisters’ saga, director Gillian Armstrong (My Brilliant Career) has painted the spirited Jo (Winona Ryder) as a perfect feminist role model for the ’90s. Susan Sarandon casts aside her sensuality to play the stalwart Marmee, and Claire Danes (of TV’s My So-Called Life) gives a moving performance as the ailing Beth. Though accessible to men, who may be more willing to watch this at home than they were at theaters, Little Women is really intended for women, who understand that the bond between sisters is the strongest — and, at times, the most tenuous — one there is.
