Quinn brings tremendous feeling to the role of Santiago, Ernest Hemingway’s indomitable ancient whose streak of bad luck gets broken by a stirring battle with a giant marlin. Unlike the miscast Spencer Tracy of the 1958 version, Quinn seems to have been out in a boat every day of his life: His face is a weathered relic of survival. But somebody should have put a lid on the kid (Cruz) who idolizes Santiago and whose cuteness throws this otherwise sensitive made-for-British-TV movie way out of whack. B-
