The first female jockey to win the Belmont Stakes, as well as the first to win five races in one day, Julie Krone has also ridden her way to purses totaling more than $56 million. This life story would have been better limited to her riding history, since Krone’s personal life is unremarkable at best. When she tackles riding, however, her story comes alive: She describes her love of horses, her raging ambition, her injuries, victories, and finally her famous fall at Saratoga in 1993, when she was trampled by another rider’s horse and nearly killed. After an eight-month recovery, Krone returned to the track to race with 14 screws and 2 plates in her ankle — and resumed her winning ways. This autobiography seems premature for a 31-year-old, but racing fans, at least, will surely eat it up. B
