Writer-director Jeremy Leven’s coup was to cast Johnny Depp in the title role as a young man who says he’s the legendary Spanish lover, Marlon Brando as his shrink, and Faye Dunaway as the doctor’s wife-and to let the whimsy rip. The uplift in this romantic fantasy comes from some terrific acting and interacting: Pairing Depp and Brando (two fascinating eccentrics) results in a beautifully syncopated relationship, while linking Brando and Dunaway is downright inspired. (The two have a real spark!) Even though there’s no great romantic climax to the story, which might be a drawback for Depp lovers looking to swoon, there is an airy delicacy to this tall tale that fits in perfectly with the weather these days.
