‘Twas the weekend before Oscars, and all through the house, just one creature was stirring, and it wasn’t a mouse. Dustin Hoffman’s monkey-mad Outbreak held at No. 1 for the third week, staving off Damon Wayans’ Major Payne, which according to a studio source failed to lure a significant white audience despite Universal’s marketing push, and the Stephen King psychodrama Dolores Claiborne, which earned a hefty $4,706 per screen. Muriel’s Wedding and Circle of Friends, starring dreamboat Chris O’Donnell, added screens to good effect; and boycott-ready Priest, opening in 35th place, drew crowds to its eight screens.
