A virtual remake of the 1967 classic Hot Rods to Hell, the straight-to-video THE ROAD KILLERS (1995, LIVE, R, priced for rental) has Christopher Lambert and family running afoul of a gang of young killers (led by A River Runs Through It’s Craig Sheffer) and hitting a downward spiral of weirdness before finding righteous redemption. Rising young stars David Arquette and Adrienne Shelly steal the show as the requisite giggling psychopath and the gang leader’s perpetually addled girlfriend. Even better, director Deran Serafian (Terminal Velocity) never dirties the film’s unrelenting violence with unnecessary gore, and saves its most shocking bit of sadism for Lambert’s crowning moment as an avenging dad. B+
