In the past few weeks I’ve been reading the new bio of Bill Clinton, David + Maraniss’ First in His Class. It’s very interesting, very thorough and evenhanded, a good character study of a very complicated man. I’m also reading By Love Possessed, by James Gould Cozzens, which came out in the late ’50s. I recently read Stephen Fry’s The Hippopotamus, which was a huge best-seller in England. Fry’s a playwright and actor most recently he was in I.Q. It’s a wonderful comic novel, one of the funniest satirical books I’ve read in a long time. I also just finished another English novel, The Rector’s Wife, by Joanna Trollope, some descendant of Anthony’s. It’s the study of a woman’s life and frustrations in a small, English community.
