Last year’s Pirate Prude EP revealed Helium singer Mary Timony’s talent for eccentric lyrics, sinister vocals, and a catchy sort of guitar distortion. On stage, Timony stares down her audience with the penetrating wisdom of a lunatic eighth grader. This, the band’s first album, is like that stare: mesmerizing, mysterious, rebellious, and damn smart.
