Black Box: A Video Retrospective, Volume 2 (1994, Wax Trax!, $14.98) Chicago- based Wax Trax has released a lot of influential industrial music during its 14-year history. If tunes by the likes of KMFDM and Laibach have dated rather badly, it must be said that their videos were crap from day one. Arty and portentous, they provide knuckleheaded demonstrations of such principles as ”Most people hate mimes, but stupid people are impressed by mimes in bondage gear” and ”Appropriate fascist aesthetics! It’s fun, it’s easy, and it makes teenagers think you’re saying something heavy!” Even the few visually engaging clips (My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult’s ”Kooler Than Jesus”; Greater Than One’s ”Utopia”) are ruined upon contemplation. Recommended for folks with too many tattoos, too little imagination, and a frustrated will to power. D -Glenn Kenny
